Volunteer Opportunities

Friendship Bible Study

Serve as a friend and teacher to a person with a mental impairment in the context of a Bible study. Volunteers are also needed to assist with refreshments and music leadership.

Friendship Saturday

Just like with Friendship Bible Study, you can be a friend and teacher, but you will also be serving the family by providing a day of respite. You can assist with crafts, games or meals, but mostly, just be a friend.

Handycamp

Each camper is paired with a volunteer companion. This summer hundreds of volunteers are needed to share this Christ centered vacation with one of our campers. Volunteers are also needed for meal preparation and serving, music leadership and nursing.

Serving Hands

You can work side by side to serve the Church with a person who is mentally impaired. By example, you will become a mentor that guides others into servanthood.

Love Notes

Make a commitment to just one person or ten people to send at least three notes or cards during the year. You are needed to send a birthday card and a greeting during the Christmas and Easter seasons.

SonRise Retreat

SonRise Retreat is a weekend (Friday through Sunday), mini Bible camp, sponsored by LDM at the FFA Training Center in Trafalgar, IN. This retreat is for adult guests who are mentally impaired. The guests' ages range from 18 to 65. Guests are paired with volunteers who range from age 14 through retirement. Activities include Bible study, arts and crafts, campfire, karaoke, dancing, hiking, and enjoying God's creation.

SonRise Retreat has three major goals:

  • Provide a needed Respite for the families that are caregivers for our guest.
  • Share the love of Jesus Christ with adults who are mentally impaired and give them a weekend that is Christ-centered.
  • Give volunteers an opportunity to become a friend with a person who is developmentally disabled. Love and patience are the only requirements.

Nursing

A nurse is needed for each Friendship Saturday and SonRise Retreat, also two nurses are present at all times for each Handycamp session. Nurses play a special role in the lives of the people we serve. The nurse is cherished! It doesn't matter whether you can serve a day, a portion of a day, or an entire week, you will influence the lives of these special people and our volunteers. You will pass medications, apply a bandage with love, sooth someone that is home sick and comfort those who don't want to go home when camp is over.
